Fraction to Percentage Table (1/2 to 1/20)

Percentage, profit and loss, data interpretation and simplification all go faster when you see 12.5% and think 1/8. The table gives every unit fraction up to 1/20.

How to use the table

  • Values are rounded to two decimals. 1/3 = 33.33%, 1/7 = 14.29%.
  • For a numerator above 1, multiply the unit fraction: 3/8 = 3 × 12.5% = 37.5%, and 5/6 = 5 × 16.67% = 83.33%.
  • Going back: 12.5% = 1/8, 37.5% = 3/8, 62.5% = 5/8, 87.5% = 7/8. Also 16.67% = 1/6, 33.33% = 1/3, 66.67% = 2/3.

Worked examples

  • 87.5% of 640 = 7/8 of 640 = 640 ÷ 8 × 7 = 560.
  • A price rises from 80 to 90. The rise is 10, and 10/80 = 1/8 = 12.5%.
  • Reading a data interpretation table: if a value is 1/5 of the total, it is 20%, no division needed.
